Brands of Popcorn Gifts

Filed Under Popcorn Gifts | Leave a Comment

Well, I guess the brands of popcorn gifts can fall under two main and broad categories – kernels/popcorn and poppers/machines.

Kernels and Popcorn

If you are not the fussiest person out there, or are on a budget the easiest and cheapest ways to get your kernels is from the grocery store. They are just as good as specialty store bought ones and if you are going to flavor them yourself, then it does not really matter anyway.

If you have more money to spend on popcorn gifts – either for yourself or someone special, then look online to buy kernels and already flavored and popped popcorn. Doing a search in your favorite search engine should bring up the results of some of the best.

Tests have also been carried out on what corn pops the best or most. These tests can tell you what kernels give you more bang for your buck, or pop for your buck J And the results, from what I have read, show that the most expensive ones do not equate to the most poppable.

Popcorn Poppers and Popcorn Vending Machines

You need to ask yourself some very important questions before you buy yourself a popcorn machine, and ask these questions even more when buying as popcorn gifts.

These are:

  • Will you or the person you are giving it to be able to operate it?
  • What size portions will you be making and how often
  • Will you or the person you are giving popcorn gifts to be able to clean it
  • How will it be used?
  • How much room do you have and where are you going to put it?

But these questions are mainly for the big popcorn vending machines and not so much for the popcorn poppers that you see on table tops.

I hope this post has explained the different types of popcorn gifts that are out there today. You can buy all of these on the internet. Amazing! Pop pop.

What Are The Different Types of Popcorn Gifts?

After my last post on popcorn gifts – or you might like to call it a rant – you may be asking this question. What ARE popcorn gifts? Well my dear readers, this post will answer that question.

Corn Kernels – this is the absolute basic, necessary gift and starting point. But it is not as easy and simple of a gift as it sounds. Do you know how many types of kernels there are? Neither do I, but I know there is more than one. You can have different colour corn – I don’t mean pink or green – I’m talking natural kernels. You can also get them in different textures – more chewy or less. And sweetness varies also.

Flavorings – Basics are fine. Salt only or butter and salt. But we all like a bit of variety in our lives don’t we. How about different colors, caramel, chocolate, cheese (yes, cheese), nuts, a mixture of the above.

The Machine Maker/Popper – These include the table top machines where you pour the kernels and other ingedients in – and your favorite popcorn is the result. These popcorn gifts are great to give at Christmas time as business gifts.

Vending Machine – Want to go a bit more upscale, upmarket? Do away with the table top popper and get a vending machine. You can get them old-style on wheels and all. Now that’s what I call the gift of all popcorn gifts.

Popped Popcorn – You are correct. You can buy popped corn ready to give as gifts. I must say that this is my least favourite only because it’s not warm and fresh when you eat it. There are upsides. You will be able to find flavors that you cannot make at home and are specialized to some stores only.

What are you going to put all that popped popcorn into? Popcorn Tins and Popcorn Bowls! You can buy very lovely and lifelong tins for storage of your kernels or popped corn. These make beautiful and long lasting popcorn gifts and can even be collectors’ items.

Why Give the Gift of Popcorn Gifts?

I keep getting asked the question – why would you want to give the gift of popcorn gifts? And I say ‘there are sooo many reasons to give the gift of love, because that is what it is). Popcorn gifts are AMAZING! Surprisingly, poppingly, amazing.

  1. Everyone likes it! When people need to buy someone a gift, and they don’t really know the person, they usually buy them chocolate. Why? Why not buy them some popcorn gifts? Everyone eats popcorn!
  2. They are an awesome addition to gourmet packs and baskets generally. Why fill those things up with the same ol’ same ol’? Try something new and exciting – the receiver will thank you for it and know that you put some thought into it – not having the standards and all.
  3. They are incredibly tasty! I know you are agreeing with me there. Nuff said.
  4. You have such a wide variety with one item. There are so many types of popcorn – caramel, butter, pink, blue, green are just the ones I can think of at the moment but I know there are more.
  5. Good Christmas gifts from and to businesses. Engrave some poppers and give your contacts popcorn gifts. Let’s assume some things here- your business contacts have kids. They are not going to throw away THIS gift. And your businesses name will be visible in their kitchen ALL THE TIME!
  6. Movie nights are so much more popular these days than before (and boy they have always been popular) due to DVD’s. We love DVD nights in –and we want our popcorn too. Mmmm.
  7. No matter what, children love it and it’s a healthy snack too so parents should have no problem with the amount their children or the neighbors kids are eating
  8. Give it to a diabetic! Oh my goodness, I just though of this now as I wrote the ‘healthy’ thing in the point above.
  9. Save money and make your own candy – popcorn and caramel. No need to go out and spend money buying Halloween candy. Make some with your popcorn gifts that hopefully someone has given you (or you have given yourself) and give it to those trick or treaters.
  10. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving. No-one thinks of it when thinking of a gift – it’s unique.

So, there you go. Popcorn gifts are the way to go.

The History of Popcorn Gifts

The history of popcorn gifts must begin with the history of popcorn first. We all know, or we should know anyway, that popcorn comes from corn. Corn had been grown by our ancestors for generations and actually has its start in Mexico. It quickly spread to other parts of the Americas and was cultivated by Native Americans.

Popcorn has been around since corn has been. The Aztecs used it in ceremonies and the Peruvians (bless their dear souls) ate it as a confectionery. Invading Spaniards saw these things and hastily made notes on what these people were doing with corn. I am sure they took this new found discovery back home as their own popcorn gifts.

Popcorn was considered a luxury until the Great Depression. Instead of the hotdogs and pretzels we have on the streets now, street vendors used to push around steam and gas powered poppers through town and through fairs (as they were more popular than today).

Popcorn started up again after the Great Depression and had their base in movie theatres. The boys taking the girls on dates to the movies – buying her popcorn. Oh the smells of melted butter and warmth and that crunchiness. Unfortunately, popcorns popularity dropped after TV was introduced into the home. People’s attendance at the movie dropped –awww. So many ups and downs our dear old popcorn has had – it’s amazing it hasn’t gone through an emotional breakdown. We are all still chomping away on it, so it’s ok.

Microwaves brought the popcorn into the home. Well, this is not entirely true. I remember a time when we didn’t have a microwave at home. Mum used to throw some kernels into a pot on the stove with some salt (and oil possibly – don’t quite remember) and hold the lid on while it popped away. These were the greatest popcorn gifts my brother and I received and some of my fondest memories - my brother and I sitting at the counter in the kitchen watching mum with her arm extended – as far away from the stove as possible. The children grinning waiting for our popcorn gifts. Thanks Mum.

Microwaves did make it easier to have popcorn though. Throw the bag in for a couple of minutes and voila! Although not for some. My friends had a flatmate that burnt popcorn in the microwave. Ditzy.

Well, you wanted the history of popcorn gifts didn’t you? OK. I’ll make some of this up. As popcorn has always been the thing to eat at the movies, and microwaves are now a consumer electronic in almost every household, popcorn has a high popularity rating. Therefore, popcorn gifts do also. It’s just that not many people think of it. Give the gift of love – give some popcorn gifts.
